THERE IS A FIELD.
WE'LL MEET YOU THERE.
A.R.T. (Audacious Raw Theater) is celebrating its 8th Year with Lanesboro Arts!
Since 2023, we have been working with the overarching theme of Common Ground.
Under this umbrella, we are taking on stories and performances that, at first glance, may seem polarizing in nature. In 2023, we focused on Land Stewardship and Climate Change.
This year, our work will center around Parenthood, Procreation, and Reproductive Justice. (In 2025, we will tackle The Second Amendment and the rise in gun violence.)
As ARTists, we actively seek to cultivate and create stories from a wide range of diverse people. We wish to reflect all sides, so instead of solely focusing on what divides us, we will strive to uncover collective values that unite us.
For Year 8, we are creating a devised work based on the poem, There is a Field by the Persian poet Rumi:
Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing,
There is a field. I'll meet you there.
When the soul lies down in that grass,
The world is too full to talk about.
Ideas, language, even the phrase each other
Doesn't make any sense.*
Additionally, inspired by the words of Diné Activist Pat McCabe:
"There is a circle, and within the center of that circle is LIFE."
Artistic Director Catherine Glynn writes:
"Life is a circumference surrounded by circumstances. Without compassion and listening—the capacity to bear witness to another's circumstances—we lose perspective. We become myopic and self-centered, often self-righteous. We become the center of the circle rather than part of the momentum that moves things forward."
To this end, we are partnering with UpLift Physical Theatre to elevate our work to a heightened level of poetic movement! Artistic Director Catherine Glynn is hosting small community-based workshops, holding conversations, gathering materials, and developing artwork that will serve as a springboard for the artists to start creating when they arrive in Lanesboro in late June.
The acclaimed professionals joining Catherine have backgrounds in Commedia Dell' Arte, Music, Storytelling, Mime, and Dance, and they will bring this year's Audacious Raw Theater to a radical and raw place this year, and we couldn't be more thrilled with this ensemble of theatre-makers!.
The show is recommended for ages 13 and up.
As always, Audacious Raw Theater aims to reflect reality in fragments and fractals. To that end, we will devise powerful and provocative performances that gather our community on common ground for the common good.

After graduating from Northern Kentucky University with her BFA in Musical Theatre Performance, she performed professionally all over the country from Minnesota to Florida to New York City, before discovering her real dream role - Ms. Katie! She holds her Masters in Theatre Education from the University of Northern Colorado and currently teaches at City Springs Theatre Company and Firefly Theatrical. Her original musicals have been produced in Tampa, Atlanta, and New York City, and her most recent work, Willow Wood, had its world premiere at the Nashville Children’s Theatre in the summer of 2023. ERIC DECKER'S theatrical career began on May 1st, a few decades ago, at Lanesboro resident Peggy Hanson and Frank Wright's wedding reception; Eric and Denny Bell committed to restarting the Lanesboro Community Theater with summer melodrama performances in Sylvan Park; LCT now has full seasons in St. Mane! Since then, he has founded Absolute Theatre (Rochester, MN) and earned his MA in Theatre from the Chicago College of Performing Arts. While directing nearly 100 shows regionally, he has recently fallen in love with sound design as an opportunity to supplement and shape works of art. While sometimes this means he's in charge of the doorbells and lion roars, he has also been able to dabble in dozens of genres and create soundscapes to tell entire stories. New works and devised theatre are particularly noteworthy to his growth, as the collaborative process is rewarding beyond measure to him. He has been a Core Member of the A.R.T. Ensemble since it's inception!
